CL: Lewandowski scores against Shakhtar
Robert Lewandowski scored a goal to help Borussia earn an important 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk.
It was an important away draw for Borussia Dortmund that will give them a great chance to advance to the next round in the Champions League.
This was Lewandowski's 5th goal in 7 matches this year in the Champions League and he has scored one goal in each of his last 7 matches for Borussia Dortmund. Fellow Poles Jakub Błaszczykowski and Łukasz Piszczek also played very well against Shakhtar yesterday.
Talk has been surrounding Łukasz Piszczek recently who has been battling a hip injury. Apparently he has been playing with strong pain killers and will undergo a season ending operation as soon as Borussia Dortmund fall out of the Champions League. This has implications for Poland's World Cup qualifying campaign as we have matches against Ukraine and San Marino on March 22 and March 26, respectfully. If Borussia get past Shakhtar Donetsk, Piszczek should be able to join the national team - unless his injury worsens.
Borussia will host Shakhtar on March 5th in the return leg. The German champions will advance to the next round unless the Ukrainian club manages to win in Dortmund or draws with 3 or more away goals.
Other Poles:
Łukasz Załuska's Celtic FC lost 0-3 at home against Juventus this week and have all but sealed their exit from the Champions League. Załuska has not made any appearances in the Champions League this season as Fraser Forster is Celtic's #1 keeper.
Next week on February 19th, Arsenal FC will host Bayern Munich and it is expected that Polish keeper Wojciech Szczęsny will start for Arsenal while Łukasz Fabiański will most likely be on the bench. It will be a tough challenge for Arsenal as they will be facing very strong Bayern Munich club that has only lost once in 21 Bundesliga matches thus far while scoring 55 goals and allowing only 7. Arsenal has been slowly turning things around this season, but in order to have any chance against Bayern - they cannot allow their typical defensive mistakes.
